Broadcast Reader

This is a radio broadcast reader that was written for my media writing course. I was told to chose four newsworthy stories that would be considered major headlines in either World, National, Business or Sports news. I chose World News.

(TALIBAN RELEASED IMAGE OF MAYRTED LEADER)

The Pakistani Taliban has released an image showing the face of their leader, Hakimullah Mehsud after he was reportedly killed in a drone strike last week. This is the newest indication that the leader has died. The image was posted on the Facebook Page for the Pakistani Taliban’s media arm and shared in jihad circles online. The image’s title is the Esteemed Martyr Amir Hakimullah Mehsud. The US government alleged that Mehsud was involved in the 2009 suicide bombing of a CIA outpost and the failed attempt to detonate a car bomb in New York City’s Time Square in 2010. A Taliban spokesperson said Sunday that the organization is in mourning and has not yet named a permanent replacement leader.

(AMERICAN FLAGS BURNED IN IRAN AT FORMER US EMBASSY)

Ten thousand Iranians protested outside the former US embassy in Tehran today by burning the US flag and images of President Obama to mark the anniversary of the 1979 capture of the building. Annual demonstrations take place at the site but this year the demonstration was bigger than usual. It was driven by Iranians anger towards President Hassan Rouhani’s decisions to reopen communication with the west. The demonstration consisted largely of students and old revolutionaries from 1979. Several protestors told NBC News that they were participating because they did not trust the US and did not want Iran to work with its archenemy. Rouhani broke the thirty-four year diplomatic silence with the US in a 15-minute phone call to President Obama after the UN assembly in September. Rouhani proceeded to do an interview with NBC News and write an op-ed in the Washington Post stating the he declared an end to the “age of blood feuds.”

(BOMB EXPLODES NEAR COMMUNIST PARTY OFFICES IN CHINA)

A series of explosions went off in front of Communist Party headquarters this morning. It killed one person and injured eight others. The explosion occurred in Taiyuan, the capital of the Shanxi province. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion. This explosion comes just a few days before a major Communist leadership party meeting that is set to start in Beijing the weekend. Security has already been heightened in China following the deadly attack in Tiananmen Square last week. There have been no suggestions that the explosion in Taiyuan is linked to the attack in Tiananmen Square.

(LONDON ARCHEOLOGISTS FIND ROMAN STATUE)

London archeologists unveiled a Roman sculpture of an eagle with a serpent trapped in its beak Wednesday afternoon. Archeologists have dated the 26 inch tall sculpture to the first or second century. The site in London where the statue was found is known to once have been home to a Roman cemetery. Archeologists believe that the eagle had been part of a mausoleum whose foundations were also uncovered during the dig. This sculpture will be on display at the Museum of London for the next six months.
